DIY Sewing for beginners - Sew a little heart
Share
Here is a simple little idea to use up some leftover stuffing from a sewing kit, or to give a second life to a few fabric scraps.
Sometimes, a few pieces of felt or fabric, a needle and a bit of thread are all it takes to create something soft and precious. This little heart is a very simple sewing project, perfect for children with guidance or for beginners who want to practice their first hand stitches.
It is also a lovely way to slow down and create together.
Materials
- Two pieces of fabric (felt or fabric scraps)
- Sewing thread and embroidery floss
- A needle and pins
- Scissors
- Stuffing
- A pencil to trace the shape (optional)

Make sure to print it at 100% and do not select “scale to fit” in order to keep the correct size.
Steps
Draw a heart on your fabric, then cut out two identical shapes.

Optional : you can embroider a small smile, one or two eyes, or a few delicate stitches to give it its own personality.
Place the two pieces on top of each other, right sides together if you are using woven fabric, and hold them in place with your fingers or a pin.
Sew all around the edge using a simple stitch, such as a running stitch or a back stitch.

Leave a small opening of a few centimeters.
Add a little stuffing inside the heart.

Finish sewing to close the shape completely.

Your little heart is ready.
A Simple Sewing Activity for Beginners
This project helps beginners learn how to handle a needle, follow a shape and discover the joy of seeing something take form under their fingers. The stitches may be uneven, and that is perfectly fine. Every heart is unique.
If you would like to go a little further, you can also discover the Petit Loulou sewing kits, thoughtfully designed to help adults gently guide first sewing discoveries. It is a simple project, but one that brings a great sense of pride once finished. It is also a simple way to learn, experiment and build confidence.
Happy sewing!
